The SeaLife SportDiver is a compact and lightweight underwater housing for Apple’s iPhone. The SportDiver housing will allow divers to take photos and video with their iPhone down to 130 feet or 40 meters. The SportDiver can encase iPhone 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus, X, Xr, Xs, Xs Max, 11, 11 Pro Max, SE (2nd Gen), 12, 12 Mini, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max models. The heavy-duty housing is constructed of Polycarbonate, stainless steel, aluminum and optical grade glass. And while the SportDiver housing is “heavy duty”, it is not heavy, weighing less than 1.5 pounds (641 grams), and is lightweight for travelling and offers almost neutral buoyancy in water depending on which iPhone model is used.
The SportDiver is easy to hold and use and offers a large shutter lever and rear control buttons for easy operation, even with dive gloves. Snorkelers and Divers can get more creative with their photos or video shot by using advanced camera settings*. Adjust Zoom, Exposure (EV), Auto/Manual Focus, White Balance, Tint, Lens selection, RAW+JPEG mode, Live Photo and Background Blur (on available iPhone models).
The SportDiver housing includes the free SportDiver camera app, unlike other smartphone housing apps, there are no annoying in-app purchases or ads. You can easily switch between photo and video mode. The SportDiver App uses the iPhone camera technology native to each iPhone® model. The app supports the present and previous versions of iOS, the app is updated according to new versions of the OS. Get information on the latest SportDiver app update here.
The App Playback mode shows full size photos and videos with vertical thumbnail strip to easily locate your images. Videos start playing automatically when selected. All files are also saved to iPhone camera roll. The SportDiver housing automatically connects to your iPhone and the SportDiver app using Bluetooth® Low Energy (LE) 5 wireless technology. No cables or buttons touch the phone and offers ultra-low power consumption for both the phone and the housing which is powered by two AAA batteries that last over 50 hours of continuous use.
For enhanced imaging results, a removable underwater color-correction filter is included with the SportDiver which restores natural underwater colors. The filter easily attached or removes underwater and includes a safety tether to prevent loss. The SportDiver housing features triple 1/4-20 tripod mounts which mounts to any light or light tray with standard tripod threads such as SeaLife’s range of Sea Dragon underwater photo/video lights.
For the phone’s safety and protection, the SportDiver has a sturdy holding spring and rubber grip tabs that securely hold the iPhone® in place and add shock-protection. The SportDiver has “Dual Leak Alarms” which include an internal moisture alarm and a vacuum pressure alarm which alert the diver with on-screen warnings, audio and LED signal in the unlikely event the waterproof seal is compromised and there’s a loss of housing pressure or moisture is detected. The door of the SportDiver is sealed with a TPE O-ring and a robust cam-lock sealing latch that easily and securely locks waterproof door. To prevent interior fogging from residual moisture, the SportDiver uses the anti-fogging agent “Moisture Muncher” capsule which prevents fogging and internal condensation.
*Some iPhones may not offer all of the settings and functions because of hardware/software limitations. See Troubleshooting and Technical Updates for details.

Q: When will SportDiver ANDROID version be available?
A: App engineers are working on the Android app, which will be compatible with the same SportDiver underwater housing (item # SL400) that is currently used for the iPhone. The SportDiver Android app will be available in June 2021.
Q: Can I lock and unlock the phone when it is inside the SportDiver housing to save battery power?
A: It is not possible to lock or unlock the phone when it is inside the housing. Apple iOS controls that function. The phone must be unlocked and SportDiver app running when it is inside the housing. The app has a power save feature which dims the screen by 80% and turns off the camera. Push any button to “wake-up” the phone. Also turn off any apps running in the background to further save battery power. With these power save features, the phone’s battery should last at least 2 dives, so there is no need to open the housing between dives.
Q: Can I take a picture while recording video?
A: Not currently, but the SportDiver app does have a “Photo + 3 sec. Video” setting, which records 1.5 seconds of video before and after the picture. We are continuously working on improving the app features and hope to add PIV (Picture-in-Video) feature with future app update.
Q: Will the SportDiver Bluetooth interfere with my dive computer or other Bluetooth devices?
A: There should be no interference issues with the SportDiver and any other Bluetooth devices. The SportDiver has been tested and certified by testing lab for FCC and Bluetooth compliance, which specifically tests for interference among other radio frequency compliance regulations. In addition, the SportDiver uses frequency-hopping Bluetooth Low Energy wireless technology which does not transmit through water (i.e. to your dive computer)
Q: How do I get my iPhone 12 / 11 Pro Max to fit in the housing?
A: Replace the pre-installed medium-sized rubber grip tabs with the small-sized grip tabs. The small grip tabs are in the white envelope included with the SportDiver. See page 14 of the manual for details.
Q: I can’t play the .MOV videos on my Windows computer
A: Use VLC Media Player, which is a free download at https://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html
Q: When I put my phone into the housing, Siri appears because the volume button was pressed accidentally.
A: You can move the rubber grip tabs around so they do not touch the iPhone buttons. Page 14 in manual.
Q: When I put the phone into the housing the leak alarm goes off.
A: Your finger is conductive like water, so touching the water sensor will activate the alarm. See Page 21 in manual.
Q: Is there a way to use the SportDiver without the vacuum pressure leak alarm or is it mandatory?
A: Yes, you can disable the pre-dive vacuum pressure leak alarm in the bottom of the Settings Menu. The water sensor leak alarm cannot be disabled. See Page 37 in manual.
Q: I pumped too much and got “over-pump” warning but couldn’t release the pressure with my finger or a pen. Am I doing something wrong?
A: Move the rubber tip sideways – don’t push down on it. See Page 24 in manual.
Q: Sometimes the button response is a bit slow in the Settings menu.
A: The lens setting has a 1 second delay when changing lenses, which is necessary for stable app performance. See Page 35 in the manual.
Q: When I want to save a RAW, what is the difference between the JPG and the RAW in the iPhone? Normally my phone doesn’t have this feature.
A: The JPEG is the processed image using iPhone’s image processing technology. The RAW file is the native unprocessed image from the iPhone sensor. The SportDiver doesn’t do any processing of the RAW file.
Q: Are you planning to make an adapter for the front to be able to use a wide-angle or macro lens with the housing as well?
A: Not at this time for several reasons:
Q: Can you use the flash of the iPhone so that you can connect an external strobe?
A: No. The iPhone’s LED Flash is next to the lens and will cause internal glare. Therefore, the strobe light has been permanently disabled. Another issue is that the iPhone uses a pre-flash to control exposure. That requires a special strobe to mimic the pre-flash and then deploy a primary flash, which strobes typically won’t do. A photo-video light is the best lighting accessory and easy to use.
Q: I can’t see the menu items for some reason. Only the select menu setting is visible.
A: Change the iPhone’s Display & Brightness setting from “Dark” mode to “Light” mode. A future app update will allow you to read the full menu in Dark mode.
Q: Do I need cellular service to be able to use the SportDiver with my iPhone?
A: No, you just need WiFi to download and install the SportDiver app from the App Store to the iPhone, and a current version of iOS. Cellular service is not needed.
Q: What is maximum operating altitude for the SportDiver housing?
A: The SportDiver housing vacuum pressure check (leak analysis) works up to altitude of 6000 ft / 1829m (11.8 psia). At higher altitude, the SportDiver LED status indicator will show red/green/yellow error code.
